Islamabad, Pakistan – Authorities in Islamabad have taken extensive security measures to prevent a planned protest by the Tehreek-i-Insaf (the party led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan). The protest aims to show solidarity with the judiciary and pressure for Khan's release from Adiala Jail, where he has been incarcerated for over a year.
Imran Khan, a 71-year-old former cricketer-turned-politician, had called on his supporters to gather at D-Chowk, a significant site in the capital known for his previous 126-day sit-in in 2014, protesting alleged electoral rigging. The government's response was swift: it enforced Section 144, which bans all forms of public protests and gatherings in the city. Additionally, major entry points to Islamabad were blocked with shipping containers to restrict access.
In a bid to further curb potential unrest, the authorities banned pillion riding for two days and suspended the Metro bus service connecting Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Similar measures were implemented in Rawalpindi, which borders the capital, where Section 144 was also enforced and main roads leading into the city were barricaded.

A strong police presence, supported by paramilitary Rangers, was deployed to maintain order and prevent protestors from crossing the established barriers. Interior Minister Moshin Naqvi emphasized that comprehensive measures were in place to control any protests and urged the organizers to postpone their demonstration, particularly as the Malaysian Prime Minister was visiting the city and preparations were underway for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit scheduled for October 15-16.
Naqvi warned that individuals caught attempting to breach the barriers would face strict consequences, calling the actions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur—who expressed his intent to lead the protest—"unbecoming."
Despite governmental pressures, Gandapur has remained steadfast, announcing plans to overcome any obstacles in his way to the protest site. Sources have indicated that Khan was communicated a request to delay the protest through Chief Minister Gandapur, but Khan’s response was that the demonstration would only be postponed if the government agreed to hold off on constitutional amendments until October 25. This message was reportedly relayed to the authorities, but there has been no confirmation of a response.
As the situation unfolds, the leaders of the protest appear resolute, with Gandapur committed to reaching Islamabad’s D-Chowk regardless of the obstacles. He declared in a video statement, “We will reach Islamabad according to the directions of Imran Khan, despite violence and barricades erected to stop us.”
Meanwhile, reports suggest that dozens of supporters have been arrested in a crackdown against the protest movement, further heightening tensions in the lead-up to the planned demonstrations.
