Second Human Case of Bird Flu Confirmed in US Dairy Worker

Second Human Case of Bird Flu Confirmed in US Dairy Worker A second human case of bird flu has been confirmed in the US, following the detection of the virus in dairy cattle in late March. The latest case involves a dairy worker in Michigan, marking an expansion of the outbreak, which has primarily affected poultry for years. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assured the public that the risk remains low, emphasizing that there's no evidence of human-to-human transmission.

The CDC reported that close to 40 people, including the Michigan worker, were tested since March. All tested individuals were connected to or had exposures on dairy farms, indicating a potential source of transmission. Similarly, a dairy worker in Texas was confirmed to be infected in April, highlighting the widespread nature of the outbreak in dairy herds across nine states.

The infected Michigan worker experienced mild symptoms and has since recovered, with the Department of Health and Human Services suggesting the transmission likely occurred from cow to human contact. With the high levels of the virus in raw milk from infected cows, there's a possibility of identifying additional human cases.

Experts express concern over the potential implications of the virus spreading among cows, as it could lead to changes that increase human susceptibility. While it doesn't signal the start of a pandemic, urgent assessments are needed to determine if other human cases have occurred.

In response, the USDA has implemented measures to limit transmission, including requiring dairy cows to test negative before interstate shipment. Financial support will be provided to farmers for implementing biosecurity measures, and discussions are underway with vaccine makers for a potential human vaccine.

The CDC continues to investigate the Michigan case, emphasizing the importance of protective measures for workers in contact with infected animals. Isolation and antiviral drugs will be offered to close contacts of the infected individual, as part of efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

Overall, while the confirmation of a second human case raises concerns, ongoing surveillance and response efforts aim to mitigate the impact and prevent further transmission of bird flu.
