Saudi Crown Prince Holds Late-Night Call with Donald Trump

Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, revealed last month that one of his key priorities would be to expand the Abraham Accords. This initiative, which was launched during his first term, aims to establish normalization of diplomatic ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia. The Abraham Accords, signed in 2020, initially led to the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Trump’s plan to include Saudi Arabia in the agreement is part of his broader vision to strengthen ties between the U.S. and the Middle East.

In a late-night phone call on Wednesday, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto leader, reached out to Donald Trump to express his pleasure at the former president’s return to prominence. This call came shortly after Trump delivered his victory speech in Palm Beach, Florida. According to two sources familiar with the exchange, who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the conversation, Prince Mohammed conveyed his positive reaction to Trump’s political resurgence. However, a spokesperson for Trump did not respond to requests for further comment on the matter.

During his first term, Trump worked to bolster the U.S.-Saudi relationship, with the kingdom being the first foreign stop on his international tour in 2017. Under President Joe Biden, U.S.-Saudi ties have been more strained, particularly after Biden’s criticisms of the kingdom over the 2018 murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent Washington Post columnist, who was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Biden administration initially made efforts to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for the incident, which created a rift between the two nations.

Despite this, the relationship began to thaw after a period of tension. Talks have been ongoing between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia on matters such as defense cooperation, technology, and nuclear agreements, all of which have been linked to Riyadh’s evolving stance on Israel. Saudi Arabia, however, has emphasized that any normalization of relations with Israel depends on the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Trump has been vocal about his respect for Saudi Arabia, often expressing his belief that U.S.-Saudi relations under Biden could not reach their full potential. He has said, “With me, it will be great,” signaling his intention to restore and strengthen ties if he returns to the White House. In his interview with Al Arabiya news channel last month, Trump discussed his desire to continue building upon the framework of the Abraham Accords, envisioning a future in which Saudi Arabia plays a central role in regional peace initiatives with Israel.

While Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in the possibility of normalizing relations with Israel, the kingdom's position has grown more cautious, especially following the recent escalation of conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has led to instability in the region. The spread of violence to Lebanon has further complicated the situation, and Saudi officials have indicated that the path to full normalization with Israel hinges on the resolution of the Palestinian issue.

Thus, the phone call between Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman serves as a reminder of the longstanding, yet evolving relationship between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia, with future diplomatic efforts potentially shaping the course of Middle Eastern geopolitics. The outcome of these talks, particularly regarding the Abraham Accords and the normalization of ties between Israel and Saudi Arabia, will be closely watched by international observers.
