Despite worries about a possible U.S. government shutdown, NORAD still intended to keep tabs on Santa. The shutdown didn't happen, but if it had, NORAD would have stayed on Santa's tail.
According to Major Jennie Derenzis of the Canadian Air Force, no governmental issues would halt Santa's travels — he's powered by festive spirit! Those answering children's eager inquiries about Santa aren't military personnel but everyday folks lending a hand.
At the last check, Santa was spotted over Cayenne, French Guiana. NORAD's website allows people to track his progress live. The site also harbors games, countdowns, tunes, films, and store, in numerous languages for everyone to enjoy.
The Santa-tracking custom dates back to 1955. A Colorado Springs paper mistakenly printed a 'call Santa' number, which actually led to the Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor! They improvised and reassured children that Santa was on route, thus sparking the NORAD Santa-monitoring tradition.
Presently, Santa-watchers can keep up with his journey via Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, along with Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, and OnStar. The annual Santa tracking has become a festive highlight for families far and wide.
