Russian state-sponsored hackers, Midnight Blizzard, are once again targeting tech giant Microsoft, attempting to breach its systems using data stolen from corporate emails in January 2024, Reuters reports.
This renewed attack highlights the hackers' persistent focus on infiltrating Microsoft, a crucial provider of digital services to the US government and a major software developer.
Operating under the alias Nobelium, the group is leveraging previously pilfered data to make further incursions into Microsoft's systems, targeting source code repositories and internal networks.
Microsoft has noted a tenfold increase in the use of "password sprays" by Midnight Blizzard since the January breach, indicating heightened aggression.
Despite Microsoft's earlier disclosures, the Russian embassy in Washington has yet to respond to the recent revelation or comment on prior reports regarding Midnight Blizzard's activities.
Assuring affected customers, Microsoft pledges support and indicates the hackers may exploit acquired data to identify vulnerabilities for future attacks. However, the company affirms no evidence of compromise in customer-facing systems, ensuring their security.
This sustained effort to breach Microsoft underscores the significant threat posed by Midnight Blizzard, showcasing their extensive resources, coordination, and ongoing cybersecurity menace.
