KYIV — A wave of Russian drone and missile strikes swept across Kyiv early Friday, leaving at least three dead and more than 26 injured, Ukrainian officials report. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko described the attacks as “massive,” noting that explosions and fires damaged residential buildings, hospitals, schools, and administrative offices across the city.

The strikes disrupted parts of Kyiv’s heating and energy infrastructure, leaving some northeastern buildings without heat. Electricity and water supplies may also have been affected. Emergency teams worked through the night to rescue over 40 people trapped in fires and rubble, including 14 from a residential building in the Desnayanskyi district where one person died.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, warned residents to take shelter shortly after midnight, writing on Telegram, “it's loud in Kyiv.” Medical teams were dispatched to all affected areas, with nine people hospitalized, one in critical condition.

Ukraine’s air force confirmed that multiple regions, including Sumy, were also targeted by drones and guided bombs. These attacks come just days after a previous Russian offensive killed six people and damaged key energy infrastructure, a recurring tactic in the ongoing conflict.

Russia’s defense ministry reported intercepting or downing 216 Ukrainian drones that allegedly targeted its industrial facilities and disrupted air travel. Moscow maintains that its strikes on energy infrastructure are aimed at undermining Ukraine’s military capabilities.

The repeated assaults on civilian infrastructure have intensified calls from Ukrainian leadership for stronger sanctions on Russian energy exports. President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western nations to apply sanctions “with no exceptions,” emphasizing the strategic role of energy targets in Russia’s ongoing campaign.

As Kyiv continues to recover from the overnight attacks, authorities warned residents to remain vigilant while emergency services work to restore utilities and clear debris. The latest strikes underline the persistent threat posed by Russian drone and missile operations to Ukraine’s civilian population and critical infrastructure.
