On Friday, a court in southern Russia sentenced five men to prison terms ranging from just over six to nine years for their involvement in the anti-Israel riots that erupted at an airport in Dagestan last October. The sentences mark the first convictions related to the mass protest, which took place at the Makhachkala airport, a critical flashpoint in the unrest triggered by Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza.
The court, located in the Krasnodar region, heard that the men were convicted for their roles in the rioting, though they did not admit guilt. One of the defendants was also found guilty of violence against a government official. The trial was relocated from Dagestan to Krasnodar due to the sensitive nature of the case.
Last October, hundreds of protesters stormed the airport upon the arrival of a flight from Tel Aviv. The demonstrators, many of whom were young men, were seen waving Palestinian flags, smashing glass doors, and shouting "Allahu Akbar" as they caused chaos throughout the terminal. The unrest was fueled by a local Telegram channel’s call to confront the "uninvited guests" on the plane and force them to return to their departure point. The channel, which was later banned by Telegram, referred to the passengers in derogatory terms but did not explicitly use anti-Semitic language.

The violence led to over 20 injuries before security forces could bring the situation under control. Remarkably, no passengers on the plane were reported injured. Following the incident, police detained numerous individuals, and their cases are now being processed through the Russian judicial system.
In response to the unrest, President Vladimir Putin attributed the violence to external influences, specifically blaming the West and Ukraine, though no concrete evidence was provided to support these claims. Both Kyiv and the United States have denied any involvement or endorsement of the violence, with the U.S. strongly condemning the attacks.
