One member of the crew has been confirmed dead, while another remains missing following Ukraine's announcement of downing a Russian long-range bomber, marking the first such incident since Russia's invasion over two years ago. According to Ukraine's military statement cited by AFP, its anti-aircraft missile units, in collaboration with defense intelligence, targeted and destroyed a Tu-22M3 strategic bomber utilized by Russia to launch cruise missiles into Ukrainian territory.
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry's official account on X platform declared, "The Ukrainian Air Force successfully intercepted the enemy Tu-22M3 strategic bomber, a key instrument in Russia's attacks on Ukrainian cities. Additionally, our forces thwarted a significant air assault, downing 29 aerial threats, including 2 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles, 14 Shahed UAVs, 11 Kh-59/Kh-69 guided air missiles, and 2 Kh-22 cruise missiles."

Russian authorities confirmed the death of one crew member after the plane crashed in the southern Stavropol region during its return to base. The Russian defence ministry, quoted by state-run TASS news agency, stated, "A Russian armed forces Tu-22M3 aircraft crashed in the Stavropol region while returning to the base aerodrome after completing a combat mission. The pilots ejected."
Stavropol governor Vladimir Vladimirov, in a Telegram post, verified the crew member's death and informed that two others were hospitalized, while the search for the fourth pilot is ongoing.
Stavropol, situated in Russia's north Caucasus, east of the annexed Crimean peninsula, has experienced numerous attacks during the conflict. According to the AFP report citing the governor, the crash occurred in the Krasnogvardeysky district, approximately 400 km from Crimea's eastern border.
Ukraine's defence ministry's main intelligence directorate revealed that the plane was shot down around 300 kilometers from Ukraine, eventually crashing in the Stavropol area due to the inflicted damage.
The Russian invasion, which commenced in February 2022, continues to impact the region.
