Russia Strikes Kharkiv Hardware Store 6 Dead Dozens Injured

Russian airstrikes struck a crowded DIY hardware store and a residential area in Kharkiv, Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals and injuring dozens, as reported by local officials.

Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov disclosed on national television that six people lost their lives when two guided bombs hit the DIY hypermarket located in a residential part of the city. Among the casualties were at least two store employees. Syniehubov further stated that 40 people sustained injuries, with three in critical condition, while sixteen others remained unaccounted for.

The devastating attack, described by Deputy Mayor Igor Terekhov as an act of terrorism, targeted the shopping center bustling with numerous shoppers. This tragic event occurred amidst an escalation of strikes on the city following Russian troops' advancement across the border, establishing a new front north of Kharkiv.

Kharkiv, positioned approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the Russian border, has been a consistent target of Russian bombardment throughout the conflict, with the city's outskirts briefly seized in a failed capture attempt in 2022.

Meanwhile, across the border in Russia's Belgorod region, four residents lost their lives in Ukrainian attacks on the same day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urgently appealed to Western allies for enhanced air defenses to safeguard Ukrainian cities. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the hardware store attack as "unacceptable."

In a separate incident, a missile strike hit a residential building in Kharkiv's city center, injuring 18 individuals, according to Syniehubov. The impact left a sizable crater at the building's base, housing a post office, beauty salon, and café.

Emergency responders swiftly mobilized to extinguish multiple fires ignited by the strikes, while residents and bystanders were evacuated from the affected areas. Witnesses recounted scenes of chaos and panic at the shopping center, with many seeking refuge and assistance from rescue workers amid the devastation.

Zelenskiy, in his address to the nation, condemned the attack as another display of "Russian madness," emphasizing the urgent need for robust air defenses to prevent such atrocities. He highlighted the prolonged air raid alerts in Kharkiv and the ongoing efforts of hundreds of emergency personnel and law enforcement officers to manage the aftermath.

Despite Moscow's denial of deliberately targeting civilians, the relentless violence perpetrated during Russia's 27-month invasion of Ukraine has resulted in significant casualties and devastation.
