Russia reports five dead 46 injured in Ukraine strike on Belgorod

On Friday night, a Ukrainian attack on the southwestern Russian city of Belgorod resulted in five deaths and 46 injuries, according to local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Among the injured, 37 were hospitalized, including seven children. The attack has intensified scrutiny of ongoing regional tensions and prompted a criminal investigation by Russia's Investigation Committee.

A video circulating on social media, reportedly showing the aftermath of the strike, depicts a vehicle exploding while moving and another blast occurring shortly thereafter. The authenticity of the footage has yet to be confirmed by Reuters.

In addition to the Belgorod strike, authorities reported that a woman sustained injuries during Ukrainian shelling of Shebekino, a border town in the Belgorod region, on Saturday.

The attack on Belgorod is part of a series of frequent assaults by Ukraine on Russian border regions, with the city emerging as a significant target in recent months. Both Ukraine and Russia assert they do not intentionally target civilians amidst the ongoing conflict, which began in February 2022 when Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, branding it a "special military operation."

The Belgorod incident has further highlighted the escalating tensions and the complex nature of the conflict, with both sides grappling with the humanitarian impacts and the broader geopolitical ramifications.
