Moscow: An air strike on Belgorod Thursday resulted in at least five fatalities and 18 injuries, as reported by the region's governor. Social media videos displayed a damaged storefront in the city near the Ukrainian border, with one revealing a covered body nearby.
Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov conveyed, "Preliminary data indicates five deaths, including one child, and 18 injuries, with five being children." Ambulance crews are actively transporting the injured to medical facilities, with comprehensive assistance provided, he shared on his Telegram channel.
The defense ministry claimed to have intercepted 14 Ukrainian rockets over the region, originating from an RM-70 multiple rocket launcher system.
Belgorod, situated approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Ukraine border, has faced repeated strikes, attributed by Moscow to indiscriminate shelling from Kyiv's forces.
Last month, authorities initiated evacuations after a Ukrainian attack in December claimed 25 lives. This ongoing evacuation, Russia's largest since initiating hostilities against Ukraine in February 2022, has seen hundreds, including around 400 children, leaving the city.
