In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Russia reported on Sunday that its air defenses had intercepted and destroyed nearly 158 Ukrainian drones during the night. This large-scale drone assault is being described as one of the most significant since the conflict between the two nations began in February 2022.
The Russian Defense Ministry detailed that among the 158 drones, two were shot down over Moscow and nine were intercepted in the surrounding regions. In the Kursk region, a critical area where Ukraine had previously executed one of its largest incursions since World War II, 46 drones were neutralized. Additionally, 34 drones were downed over Bryansk, 28 over Voronezh, and 14 over Belgorod. Several other drones were also brought down over Kaluga, Lipetsk, Ryazan, and various other Russian regions.
The drone attacks caused notable damage, including hits to a coal-fired thermal power plant and an oil refinery in Moscow's Kapotnya district. A local official from the Moscow region reported that three drones attempted to strike the Kashira coal-fired power station, but there were no casualties or damages, and electricity supplies remained uninterrupted.

The oil refinery targeted in the southeast of Moscow is operated by Gazprom Neft, a subsidiary of the state-owned Gazprom. When approached by Reuters, the company declined to comment on the incident. Despite the attack, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or disruptions.
In a statement, Mikhail Shuvalov, the head of the Kashira city district, confirmed that the attempted attack on the power plant resulted in no fires, damage, or casualties.
Moscow Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz noted that the region’s defenders were actively repelling a significant UAV attack, while Vyacheslav Gladkov, the Governor of Belgorod, reported that the attack caused damage to the windows of three residential buildings and led to the collapse of a utility building at a private facility.
This latest barrage of drones follows Russia's recent major assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which involved over 200 Russian drones and missiles. It also comes a month after Ukraine launched an offensive into Russia's Kursk region, indicating a sharp escalation in the conflict. Ukraine's increased aerial assaults on Russian oil infrastructure, including refineries and oil terminals, appear to be part of a strategic effort to hinder Russia’s ongoing military operations
