Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed traffic improvements at more than 50 locations across the city in 2024. These upgrades are part of RTA’s long-term plan to make Dubai’s roads safer, more efficient, and easier to navigate. The goal is to support the city’s rapid growth while reducing traffic congestion and improving travel times for residents and visitors.
These improvements are a key part of RTA’s strategy to keep up with Dubai’s urban expansion and increasing number of vehicles on the road. By focusing on smooth traffic movement and road safety, RTA aims to make Dubai one of the best cities in the world for transport and mobility.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, shared details about the positive impact of these upgrades. “The traffic solutions we introduced this year have significantly improved the efficiency of our road network. In several areas, travel times have been reduced by up to 60%, and road capacity has increased by up to 20%,” he said.

Al Banna also explained how these improvements have helped major roads and key intersections across Dubai. Some of the main locations that underwent changes include Beirut Street, where the road was widened, and the intersection of Al Khawaneej Street and Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street, which was upgraded. Other important projects included expanding lanes from Al Rebat Street to Business Bay Crossing, widening the exit from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Rebat Street, and creating a new route linking Al Khail Road to Meydan Street.
In addition to improving major roads, RTA also focused on school zones to ensure safer and smoother traffic flow for students and parents. In 2024, eight traffic projects were completed around 37 schools in different areas of Dubai. These projects included widening roads near schools, adding extra parking spaces, improving entry and exit points, and making temporary traffic diversions to reduce congestion. As a result, peak-hour traffic in school zones improved by 20%.
Some of the schools that benefited from these improvements include Kings’ School on Umm Suqeim Street, The International School of Choueifat - Dubai, and Dubai College on Hessa Street. Schools in Al Safa, Al Warqa 4, Al Qusais, Al Mizhar, Nad Al Sheba, and Al Twar 2 also saw road upgrades, making it easier for students and parents to get to school safely and quickly.
To handle the increasing number of vehicles, RTA extended Exit 55 leading to Al Rebat Street by 600 metres, increasing the number of lanes from two to three. This expansion boosted the road’s capacity to 4,500 vehicles per hour and cut travel time from 10 minutes to just 4 minutes, a 60% improvement.
In Nad Al Sheba, RTA introduced a new entry and exit for vehicles coming from Meydan Street. They also turned the intersection of Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and Nad Al Sheba Street into a roundabout. These changes helped improve traffic flow and reduced travel time in the area by 60%.
Looking ahead, RTA has big plans for 2025. Al Banna announced that over 75 new traffic projects will be carried out across Dubai next year. These projects will include expanding and upgrading major intersections, creating new entry and exit points for residential and commercial areas, and making school zones even safer.
“Our goal is to keep improving Dubai’s roads to make transportation smoother and more efficient for everyone. We want to ensure that Dubai remains one of the top cities in the world for infrastructure and mobility,” he concluded.
