The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully completed the Al Khail Road Development Project, marking a significant advancement in the city’s transportation infrastructure. This project involved extensive upgrades across seven key locations and aims to enhance the overall traffic flow and reduce travel times for the 1.5 million residents who rely on this vital road.

The development included the construction of five bridges spanning a total of 3,300 meters and road widening that extends over 6,820 meters. These enhancements are expected to facilitate a 30% reduction in travel time and significantly increase the capacity of existing intersections and bridges, enabling them to accommodate approximately 19,600 vehicles per hour. The improvements will not only resolve traffic congestion at interchanges but will also ensure free-flowing traffic along Al Khail Road.

RTA adopted an innovative approach to accelerate construction, managing to cut the project duration from 18 months down to just nine months—an impressive reduction of 80%. This expedited timeline was achieved by awarding contracts to multiple companies, allowing for a large daily workforce of 5,000 engineers and laborers. Collectively, they logged an impressive six million work hours and operated around 650 machines and pieces of equipment every day throughout the construction period.

The Al Khail Road Development Project is a key strategic initiative aimed at upgrading parallel and supporting road networks that connect with Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. As one of the primary arterial roads in Dubai, Al Khail Road stretches from the Business Bay Crossing to its intersection with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, featuring five lanes in each direction, with expansions to over six lanes in certain sections.

Among the significant improvements, a new 700-meter bridge was constructed in Zabeel between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street intersections, connecting traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali with a capacity of 4,800 vehicles per hour. In Meydan, a 610-meter, two-lane bridge was built between Al Meydan Road and Ras Al Khor Road intersections, facilitating traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Additionally, improvements were made to 1,550 meters of surface roads to enhance connectivity.

In Al Quoz 1, a 650-meter, two-lane bridge was constructed to connect traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali, which also boasts a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. The project further included 2,170 meters of surface road enhancements for improved access from Al Khail Road to Al Waha Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street.

Another notable feature is the 640-meter, two-lane bridge built in Ghadeer Al Tair, connecting traffic from Latifa Bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira, which also carries a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Surface road improvements of 1,350 meters were executed to connect traffic from Al Khail Road to Meydan Street. In Jumeirah Village Circle, a 700-meter, two-lane bridge was constructed to facilitate traffic from Al Khail Road to Hessa Street, with surface road improvements over 900 meters also implemented.

Expansion works in Al Jaddaf included the addition of a new lane over 600 meters to improve traffic flow towards Deira, increasing the road's capacity by approximately 2,000 vehicles per hour between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street. At the entrance to Business Bay, a surface widening project added an extra 435-meter lane, ensuring smoother flow from Al Khail Road into the Business Bay area and enhancing traffic safety.

Overall, the Al Khail Road Development Project represents a significant investment in Dubai's infrastructure, promoting improved traffic management and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
