In preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup, the Indian cricket team's selection process is proving to be a complex task for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team management. While some positions in the playing XI seem secure, there are certain areas that are generating intense debate, according to multiple reports. The focus lies particularly on the players designated for backup roles, such as the reserve opener, pacer, and wicketkeeper.
A recent report by Cricbuzz sheds light on the pivotal decisions facing India's captain, Rohit Sharma. Two key considerations loom large: whether to include a fourth specialist pacer, given the presence of Hardik Pandya in the squad, and whether to integrate Shubman Gill into the lineup.

Interestingly, the report suggests that Hardik Pandya may not be the automatic choice for the vice-captaincy. Rishabh Pant, who has demonstrated a remarkable recovery from injury and is currently showcasing stellar performances for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024, is also being considered for the role. Furthermore, there's speculation that Yuzvendra Chahal, despite being the IPL's highest wicket-taker, might not secure a spot in the T20 World Cup squad. Instead, Kuldeep Yadav is anticipated to be the primary spinner, with Axar Patel likely edging out Ravi Bishnoi for the secondary spin-bowling role.
The batting order, as per the report, is anticipated to feature skipper Rohit Sharma, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav in the top order. The middle order is expected to comprise Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja. Additionally, either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh may secure a spot, while the second wicketkeeper's position is contested between Sanju Samson and KL Rahul.
Despite being a prominent figure in the squad, Hardik Pandya's recent performances for the Mumbai Indians (MI) have raised concerns among fans. Scoring only 197 runs in nine matches and taking four wickets at a high economy rate of 11.95, Pandya's form has been under scrutiny.
In anticipation of the T20 World Cup 2024 squad announcement, NDTV Sports conducted a poll to gauge fan sentiments. According to the poll, conducted on NDTV Cricket's WhatsApp channel, a significant portion of fans believe that Hardik Pandya should not feature in the Indian cricket team for the competition.
