Former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will not be returning to his position in the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, contrary to reports suggesting otherwise, two sources familiar with the situation confirmed.

Earlier, a report speculated that Lighthizer would make a comeback in Trump's second term to oversee the country’s trade policies, citing unnamed sources involved in discussions within Trump’s transition team. However, sources stated that this report was inaccurate, calling it "untrue" and adding that Lighthizer has not been asked to return.

Lighthizer, a key figure during Trump’s first term, played a pivotal role in implementing aggressive trade policies, including imposing significant tariffs on Chinese imports and renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico. His name had been frequently mentioned in Republican circles as a potential candidate for various high-profile cabinet positions, including Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of Commerce.

Despite these speculations, Lighthizer has declined to comment on the recent reports or the ongoing discussions within the transition team regarding cabinet selections.

Trump's transition team has not responded to requests for clarification on the matter. Meanwhile, Trump announced his choice of Susie Wiles, one of his campaign managers, to serve as White House Chief of Staff.

As Trump prepares to return to the White House, reports suggest that he intends to accelerate the aggressive trade agenda he pursued during his first term. This could include new tariffs, such as a blanket 10% tariff on all imported goods, with steeper levies on imports from China and other nations. The implementation of these tariffs is expected to drive up consumer prices, which could have widespread economic implications. China’s top envoy to the U.S. has already warned that there are no winners in tariff wars, trade conflicts, or scientific and technological disputes.

Lighthizer’s role in shaping these policies, whether in an official capacity or not, remains a topic of interest, but for now, he will not be returning to a role in Trump’s second administration.
