Rescuers in southern Poland resumed their underground search for a missing miner on Friday, following a powerful tremor at the Rydultowy coal mine that killed one miner and injured 17 others. Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga, spokeswoman for the Polish Coal Mining Group, informed The Associated Press that improved security conditions allowed the nighttime search to recommence. Rescuers had temporarily halted operations late Thursday due to the risk of further tremors and elevated levels of methane gas underground.
The incident occurred early Thursday, with a magnitude 3.1 tremor striking approximately 1,200 meters below the surface. Of the 78 miners in the vicinity, most were swiftly brought to safety, though 17 required immediate hospitalization. Tragically, one miner succumbed to injuries upon extraction from the mine.

Coal mining in Poland, fraught with hazards such as methane gas explosions and rock bursts caused by stress in the rock, has seen several fatal accidents this year. In May, three miners perished in a cave-in at the Myslowice-Wesola colliery, following a similar fatality in April. Additional fatalities occurred in the Rydultowy mine in 2019 and 2020, where mining operations date back to 1792 and currently employ around 2,000 workers.
The coal industry, a significant employer in Poland with approximately 75,000 jobs, remains vital despite its inherent risks. Last year alone, 15 miners lost their lives in work-related accidents, underscoring ongoing safety challenges in the sector.
