A mysterious comet is racing through our solar system — and it’s catching astronomers’ attention worldwide. Named C/2025 V1 (Borisov), the celestial traveler is now moving toward both Earth and the Sun, with its closest approach to our planet having occurred on November 11.
The comet was first spotted earlier this month by Gennadiy Borisov, an amateur astronomer from Crimea known for discovering unusual space objects. His previous discovery, the 2019 Comet Borisov, made headlines as one of the few interstellar visitors ever recorded.
Unlike typical comets with glowing tails, this one appears unusually faint and tail-less, making it difficult to spot even with telescopes. Astronomers have described its trajectory as highly tilted — about 113 degrees from the solar system’s main orbital plane, suggesting an unusual origin or path.
Despite early buzz comparing it to 3I/ATLAS, an interstellar object that sparked wild alien theories in 2020, scientists believe C/2025 V1 most likely formed within our own solar system. The comet’s passage is dramatic but not dangerous — it stayed safely about 103 million kilometers from Earth, nearly 270 times farther than the Moon.
Between November 2 and 5, observatories reported their sightings to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), which officially tracks such cosmic visitors. As the comet continues its journey, it will reach its closest point to the Sun on November 16, before heading back into the darker reaches of space.
For now, skywatchers hoping to catch a glimpse will need a powerful telescope or binoculars. Even without a visible tail, the quiet passage of C/2025 V1 is another reminder that our solar system is far from still — it’s a busy neighborhood with new surprises racing through it every year.
