Palestinians in Gaza commenced their fasting for the holy month of Ramadan amidst continued fighting and worsening hunger across the strip. Pressure mounted on Israel as the humanitarian crisis grew.
Efforts by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to broker a cease-fire ahead of Ramadan, including the release of hostages and prisoners, and the delivery of humanitarian aid, hit a deadlock last week.
Gaza's Health Ministry reported 67 fatalities from Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours, bringing the Palestinian death toll to over 31,112 since the war's onset. The majority of the casualties are civilians, with women and children comprising two-thirds of the victims.
The conflict began when Hamas-led militants launched an attack into southern Israel on October 7, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, and around 250 hostages taken. Hamas still holds an estimated 100 captives.
Five months of war have displaced about 80% of Gaza's 2.3 million residents, with hundreds of thousands on the brink of famine.
In response to the escalating crisis, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for a new, longer humanitarian cease-fire and increased aid delivery to Gaza. While reaffirming Germany's support for Israel's right to defend itself against Hamas, Scholz stressed the need for improved humanitarian assistance and a two-state solution.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, urged Israel and Hamas to honor the Ramadan spirit by ceasing hostilities and releasing hostages. He expressed concern over the unprecedented civilian casualties and destruction in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent need for life-saving humanitarian aid and the removal of obstacles hindering its delivery.
Guterres warned against Israel's threatened assault on the city of Rafah, which could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He called on the international community to act swiftly to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
