Putin's Mongolia Visit: Kremlin Insists No Arrest Concerns for Russian President

The Kremlin stated Friday that it is not concerned about the possibility of Mongolia arresting President Vladimir Putin during his upcoming visit. This reassurance comes despite the fact that Mongolia is a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has issued an arrest warrant for the Russian leader.

Putin is scheduled to travel to Mongolia on Tuesday, marking his first trip to an ICC member state since the Hague-based court issued the warrant in March 2023. The ICC's warrant accuses Putin of illegally deporting Ukrainian children amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that the Russian government has a strong and positive dialogue with Mongolia, and all aspects of the visit have been carefully prepared. "There are no worries; we have a great dialogue with our friends from Mongolia," Peskov assured the media.

When questioned about whether Moscow had discussed the ICC arrest warrant with Ulaanbaatar prior to the trip, Peskov responded that the visit was thoroughly planned. He did not provide further details on specific discussions regarding the warrant.

Mongolia ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC in December 2000, committing to implement the court's warrants. This would theoretically obligate Mongolia to arrest Putin if he were to enter its territory. However, Russia has largely dismissed the ICC's warrant, and President Putin has significantly reduced his international travel since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. His visit to Mongolia marks his first trip to an ICC member state under these circumstances.
