DEHRADUN: In a deeply unsettling turn of events, Uttarakhand has witnessed yet another grave incident of violence, just a month after the nurse rape and murder case in Rudrapur. A minor girl from Moradabad was allegedly gang-raped on a parked bus at Dehradun's ISBT, underscoring the state's troubling rise in violent crimes.
The incident came to light on the evening of August 13, when the 16-year-old girl, who had traveled from Punjab to Delhi and then to Moradabad, arrived at the Dehradun ISBT bus station. The girl was discovered in a distraught and disoriented state. Initially hesitant to disclose details, she eventually revealed during counseling that she had been gang-raped on a bus. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) team, responding to her condition, rescued her from the bus station. Following the counseling, the CWC filed a case at the ISBT police outpost, which led to immediate police action.

Kusum Kandwal, Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women, visited Balika Niketan on the morning of August 14 to personally check on the minor. Kandwal expressed grave concern, stating, "After obtaining detailed information from the SSP and District Probation Officer, I have directed immediate action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime. The incident is being treated with the highest level of seriousness and concern."
According to Hemant Khanduri, PRO to SSP, the investigation has led to the detention of five bus drivers from the ISBT for questioning. The police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the bus station to collect more evidence. Inspector KK Lunthi of Patelnagar Police Station confirmed that a case has been filed against unknown individuals in connection with the gang rape. The police are actively working to identify and arrest the suspects.
This tragic event adds to the growing concerns over women's safety in India, especially in light of the recent rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata. The doctor's death has ignited nationwide protests and strikes by medical professionals demanding justice and stronger protective laws.
