Krzysztof Krajewski, the Polish ambassador to Russia, was leading the event in Smolensk, Russia, where the crash happened on April 10, 2010. The protesters held signs and shouted anti-Polish words. They also complained about the war in Ukraine and said that Poland was supporting terrorism and changing history.
In Poland, people held ceremonies to remember the crash, which is considered the worst disaster in Poland since World War II. The crash has caused more distrust towards Russia and created problems inside Poland.
After the crash, Russian President Vladimir Putin tried to make things better between Russia and Poland. But when Russia refused to return the wreckage of the plane to Poland, it made the relationship worse. People in Poland now worry more about Russia being a threat.
In Warsaw, the ceremony was attended by Jarosław Kaczyński, the brother of the late president. He is the leader of Poland's biggest opposition party, Law and Justice, and still has a big role in Poland’s politics.
The crash happened when President Kaczyński and other important people were flying to Smolensk to remember 22,000 Polish officers killed during World War II. Sadly, everyone on board, including the president and his wife, died in the crash.
A Polish investigation found that the crash was caused by bad weather and pilot mistakes. But Jarosław Kaczyński believes the crash was not just an accident. He thinks that Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Russian President Putin worked together to get rid of his brother from politics. However, many investigations didn’t find any proof to support this. Many people in Poland think Jarosław Kaczyński is spreading dangerous stories.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently said that it’s time for Poland to stop fighting over the crash. He said that people should come together and respect each other again, even though it’s still very hard.
