Several protests have been aimed at India’s top officials and diplomatic missions in Canada following the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia last year. The latest demonstration occurred in Toronto where pro-Khalistan groups staged a protest against an Indian diplomat on Thursday, marking over 20 such protests in less than a year.
Organized by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), the protest targeted India’s High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma. The demonstrations are linked to allegations suggesting Indian involvement in Nijjar's killing on June 18, 2023. Since the initial protest on July 8, 2023, India has consistently expressed concerns to Global Affairs Canada (GAC), the country’s foreign ministry, prior to each protest and heightened security measures have been implemented.
During the recent protest in Ottawa, demonstrators gathered at the High Commission building, chanting anti-India slogans for approximately four and a half hours. Indian officials reported inadequate security and filed a complaint with Canadian authorities, although they noted there was no major disruption.

These protests gained momentum after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledged "credible allegations" linking Indian agents to Nijjar's murder in the House of Commons. Despite the arrests of four Indian nationals in connection with the murder this year, investigators have not disclosed evidence of Indian involvement, though investigations continue.
The demonstrations began with online circulation of posters bearing slogans like "Kill India" featuring images of the High Commissioner and India’s Consul Generals in Toronto and Vancouver. They intensified following Trudeau's statement and targeted Indian officials at consular camps and business events across Canada.
SFJ’s general-counsel Gurpatwant Pannun has vowed to continue these protests until Indian diplomats are compelled to leave. The Canadian government initially criticized provocative rally materials but has refrained from further comments since Trudeau’s statement, emphasizing adherence to Vienna Conventions regarding diplomatic safety.
In addition to diplomatic protests, pro-Khalistan groups have targeted venues attended by Indian officials, including temples and community events, underscoring ongoing tensions between the groups and Indian authorities.
