Prince William has unveiled a new initiative to address homelessness by constructing 24 homes on his Duchy of Cornwall land. The private estate, supporting public, charitable, and private activities of the Prince of Wales and his family, will collaborate with the homelessness charity St Petrocs on the project. Scheduled to commence construction in September, the homes are expected to be completed by autumn 2025.
The initial phase of the development aims to provide high-quality temporary accommodation with a home-like atmosphere. St Petrocs will offer "wrap-around support" to assist residents in accessing training and employment opportunities. Duchy's estate director, Ben Murphy, emphasized the project's goal of breaking the cycle of homelessness in the Newquay area, stating that it aligns with Prince William's commitment to addressing the housing crisis.
The announcement is part of Prince William's broader five-year campaign, launched in 2023, to end homelessness. The Duchy of Cornwall also disclosed plans to increase affordable housing from 30% to 40%, including the construction of up to 200 additional affordable homes on its estate, in addition to the existing 1,020. The estate intends to establish a Private Rented Scheme for Nansledan, promoting accessibility for lower-income individuals, longer-term tenancies, and transparent rent increases.
Furthermore, the Duchy committed to building over 400 social rented homes and an additional 475 affordable dwellings in the South East Faversham development in Kent. The comprehensive approach reflects Prince William's determination to be part of the solution to the housing crisis, addressing the shortage of social and private rented properties contributing to homelessness nationwide.
