Prince Harry is expected to be "unlikely" to attend any future National Service of Remembrance ceremonies at the Cenotaph in London, according to a royal expert. The annual event, which honors the sacrifices of those who served in the armed forces, typically sees senior members of the Royal Family, including King Charles III, in full military regalia. However, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have not participated in recent years.
Since moving to the United States in 2020, the Sussexes have largely stepped away from their royal duties, and Prince Harry surrendered his military titles, as well as his right to wear military uniforms during formal events. While Harry continues to express his gratitude for veterans and the sacrifices they have made, his relationship with the British royal family and its traditions has changed considerably.
Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal commentator, told GB News that it is "probably unlikely" that Prince Harry will attend future Remembrance ceremonies at the Cenotaph. He acknowledged, however, that the Sussexes' actions have often been unpredictable. “The Sussexes are unpredictable, and so is life, so who knows?” Fitzwilliams added.

The royal expert also reflected on the consequences of Harry's decision to step back from his royal duties, saying it is "unfortunate" that the prince can no longer wear his uniform or hold military patronages. “It’s a tremendous loss for him personally,” Fitzwilliams remarked, adding that Harry would undoubtedly miss the moving ceremony and wish he could still be a part of it.
Prince Harry, who served in the British Army for ten years, including two tours in Afghanistan, founded the Invictus Games in 2014. The international event provides a platform for wounded and recovering service members to showcase their skills in sports. Harry’s deep admiration for fellow veterans has been well documented, and he has continued to express respect for their service, despite his absence from the British military ceremonies.
In a statement shared with People magazine, Harry reaffirmed his lifelong admiration for veterans: "I reaffirm my lifelong admiration and appreciation for the service and sacrifice you and your families have made—both in times of conflict and peace." He continued to express gratitude for the role veterans have played in defending values of liberty, freedom, and security, values he said bind individuals together across borders and cultures.
"Your service has made a lasting, positive impact for our communities, our nations, and our shared future," he said, before closing with a message of thanks to all those who have served, both in the past and present.
The National Remembrance Service has historically been a key event in the British royal calendar, where family members, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and other working royals, honor fallen soldiers and veterans. However, Harry's distance from these events has sparked public conversation about the evolving nature of his relationship with royal traditions and responsibilities. His absence at these ceremonies, despite his military service, marks a clear turning point in his path as a member of the royal family.
