ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif clarified on Tuesday amidst mounting criticism from the opposition that the upcoming counterterrorism efforts would focus on intensifying existing intelligence-based operations (IBOs), rather than launching a new large-scale military offensive. This statement followed Sharif's earlier announcement on Monday night, assuring that the planned anti-terror campaign, named "Azm-e-Istehkam (Resolve for Stability)", would not involve sweeping military actions or the displacement of local populations.
Initially, Sharif had unveiled plans for a comprehensive offensive aimed at eradicating terrorism and extremism, sparking immediate reactions from opposition parties and analysts. Speculations arose about the influence of Chinese concerns regarding the safety of their nationals in Pakistan, although domestic political and economic considerations were also considered factors in the timing of the operation.

Facing significant opposition, Sharif consulted with cabinet members to address misunderstandings and clarify the objectives of "Vision Azm-e-Istehkam". He emphasized that the campaign's primary goal remained the eradication of terrorist elements, criminal networks, and violent extremism within Pakistan.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif detailed that the majority of operations under "Azm-e-Istehkam" would be concentrated in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) and Balochistan, Pakistan's provinces known for volatility along the Afghan border. He underscored that the operation was not politically motivated but aimed solely at combating the recent surge in terrorist activities.
Highlighting historical contexts, Asif differentiated the current operation from past military engagements aligned with foreign interests, affirming that this effort was independent and aimed at securing Pakistan's own national interests. He assured that no evacuations would occur during the operation, aiming to address concerns and clarify the strategic focus of the government's counterterrorism efforts.
