PM Reaffirms Egypt's Commitment to Preventing Illegal Migration to EPP Delegation

During a meeting with Manfred Weber, Chairperson of the European People's Party Group (EPP), Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli emphasized Egypt's commitment to preventing illegal migration, despite the significant challenges posed by hosting over 9 million refugees and migrants. Madbouli highlighted that this influx creates a substantial burden and financial strain on the Egyptian state.

The Prime Minister acknowledged that Egypt is actively implementing its economic reform programs, even in the face of ongoing regional and international crises, which have had direct economic impacts on the country. He noted that Egypt has suffered losses of nearly $7 billion in less than a year due to declining revenues from the Suez Canal.

Madbouli further discussed the existing cooperation between Egypt and the European Union regarding migration issues, focusing on the importance of linking migration to development and addressing the root causes of illegal migration. This cooperation aims to create sustainable solutions for managing migration flows while fostering economic development.

In relation to financial support, Madbouli addressed the European financial package aimed at supporting Egypt's macro-economy, which amounts to €5 billion. He urged Weber to advocate for the prompt disbursement of the first tranche of this package, valued at €1 billion, before the end of the current year.

Additionally, Madbouli expressed his hope for Weber's support in securing a favorable vote in the European Parliament for the second tranche of the financial package, which totals €4 billion and is intended for the period from 2025 to 2027. This funding is seen as crucial for Egypt's ongoing economic stability and development efforts.

The discussions underscored the importance of continued collaboration between Egypt and the EU, particularly in managing migration challenges while enhancing economic resilience.
