PM Modi Looks for Quick Peace and Stability in Region Before Ukraine Visit

Ahead of his landmark visit to Kyiv, Ukrainian capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anticipation of engaging in dialogue with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This visit, scheduled for August 23, marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister will visit Ukraine since its independence in 1991.

Modi's comments came just before his departure for a two-nation trip, starting with Poland. He will be in Warsaw on August 21 and 22 before traveling to Kyiv. The prime minister emphasized his eagerness to discuss and build upon previous conversations with President Zelenskyy, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation and exploring ways to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In a departure statement, Modi highlighted India's role as a "friend and partner" and expressed hope for a swift return to peace and stability in the region. He stated, "From Poland, I will be visiting Ukraine at the invitation of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This is the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine."

The visit to Kyiv will be brief, lasting approximately seven hours. Modi will travel to Ukraine aboard a 'Rail Force One' train, a method of travel recently used by several world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, during the ongoing conflict.

Modi's visit to Kyiv follows his high-profile trip to Moscow, which drew criticism from the US and its Western allies. India has maintained a neutral stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine, advocating for dialogue and diplomatic solutions. During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month, Modi underscored that peace talks are unlikely to succeed amid ongoing violence.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described Modi’s upcoming visit as "landmark and historic." Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at MEA, emphasized that lasting peace must be based on a negotiated settlement acceptable to both parties.

In Poland, Modi will meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda to commemorate 70 years of diplomatic relations between India and Poland. He noted the significance of Poland as a key economic partner in Central Europe and expressed his enthusiasm for advancing bilateral relations. Modi will also engage with the Indian community in Poland during his visit.

Modi's trip aims to strengthen ties with both Poland and Ukraine, with a focus on fostering deeper cooperation and addressing global and regional challenges through diplomatic engagement.
