Philippines President Marcos Orders Ban on Chinese-Run Online Gambling Amid Crime Crackdown
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has mandated an immediate ban on widespread online gaming operations primarily run by Chinese entities. Marcos accused these operations of involvement in severe crimes such as financial scams, human trafficking, torture, kidnappings, and murder.

The ban affects over 400 Chinese-run online gambling outfits across the Philippines, which employ tens of thousands of Chinese and Southeast Asian nationals. This decision aligns with a broader crackdown, supported by Beijing, leading to the closure of several large complexes suspected of harboring and exploiting thousands of workers under harsh conditions.
Marcos announced this ban during his state-of-the-nation address, where he also emphasized the Philippines' intention to enhance its defensive capabilities through international security alliances. He reaffirmed the country's commitment to resolving territorial disputes in the South China Sea through diplomatic means, despite ongoing conflicts with China over trade and regional issues.
In related news, Philippine senators have called for the arrest of Alice Guo, a town mayor in Tarlac province, for failing to attend hearings investigating allegations against her. These allegations include links to a significant online gambling complex and claims that she fraudulently concealed her Chinese nationality to secure a position intended for Filipinos. Guo has denied any wrongdoing, but her assets have been frozen, and she has been suspended from her office.
Senators have criticized the online gambling industry for its association with corruption and illegal activities, including financial scamming, money laundering, prostitution, and violent crimes. Marcos, in his address, denounced these practices and ordered the gaming agency to shut down these operations by the end of the year. He also directed labor officials to find alternative employment for displaced Filipino workers.
In outlining his administration's agenda, Marcos addressed various pressing issues, including high food and electricity costs, poverty, and low wages. He also criticized his predecessor's anti-drugs campaign, highlighting his administration’s commitment to a “bloodless war” on drugs, in contrast to the previous administration's violent crackdown, which is under investigation by the International Criminal Court for potential crimes against humanity.
