Philippines: Deadly Floods, Landslides Claim 20 Lives

Post by: Dr. Amrinder Pal Singh

Manila: A devastating toll of 20 lives has been reported in the southern Philippines due to persistent heavy rains, according to provincial disaster agencies on Monday. Davao de Oro province witnessed 13 fatalities, with two individuals still missing, while neighboring Davao del Norte recorded seven deaths, as confirmed by disaster agency officials.

The calamity unfolded as a northeast monsoon and a low-pressure area's trough brought continuous rains to the southern Mindanao region from January 28 to February 2. The aftermath included deadly floods and landslides, with data from the national disaster agency highlighting the impact on over 812,000 individuals. Approximately 85,000 sought shelter in evacuation centers.

This tragic event follows a mid-January incident where 18 people lost their lives due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains in the southern part of the Philippines. The country, comprising more than 7,600 islands, faces frequent landslides and floods, given its vulnerability to approximately 20 tropical storms annually. The ongoing challenges underscore the nation's susceptibility to natural disasters.
