Pentagon: US Defense Chief Released, Set to Resume Duties

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for bladder issues related to his ongoing battle with prostate cancer. The Pentagon reported that Austin is recovering well and has resumed his full functions and duties remotely. He will continue working from home before returning to the Pentagon later this week.

This health development comes amid recent criticism directed at the 70-year-old Secretary for keeping his recent hospital stays and prostate cancer diagnosis secret. Weeks ago, it was revealed that Austin did not promptly inform President Joe Biden of his cancer diagnosis, leading to widespread condemnation.

The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington admitted Austin on Sunday due to discomfort and concern related to a bladder issue resulting from his December 2023 prostate cancer surgery. Doctors stated that the bladder issue was corrected with non-surgical procedures on February 12 and was unrelated to the cancer itself.

While Austin's health issues persist, he remains a crucial figure in the US response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Pentagon canceled Austin's plans to attend a meeting in Brussels on Ukraine's defense, making it a virtual gathering instead. Despite health challenges, Austin is expected to provide opening remarks at the virtual meeting.

The Defense Secretary's health concerns occurred as the US faces a growing crisis in the Middle East following the attack on Israel by Hamas militants in October 7. Austin had previously disappeared from public view during cancer treatment in December and January, citing his private nature and reluctance to burden others with his problems.

Austin publicly apologized for not disclosing his hospitalizations, attributing the decision to his inclination for privacy. The Biden administration has initiated investigations into the operational procedures when senior officials are incapacitated.

While concerns have been raised about Austin's handling of information and the impact on his role, the National Security Council has expressed confidence in his ability to continue his duties. Despite the challenges, Austin's health remains a focal point, especially given the critical geopolitical situations the US is currently navigating.
