The first LNG bunkering took place at Dubai Harbour for the cruise ship 'Costa Smeralda.' This achievement is not only a milestone for Dubai but also for the region, as it is the first time such an operation has been carried out in the area. The operation highlights Dubai's leadership in adopting sustainable practices and helping to protect the environment by reducing carbon emissions in the maritime sector.
The UAE is also committed to the goals set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce emissions from ships. The successful LNG bunkering operation is part of Dubai's broader efforts to protect marine ecosystems and reduce climate change impacts.
Nasser Al Neyadi, the CEO of the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation, emphasized that this accomplishment reflects Dubai’s commitment to its Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050. He said that the operation is an example of how the city plans to generate 100% of its energy from clean sources by mid-century. Al Neyadi also mentioned that Dubai aims to overcome challenges and promote environmentally friendly practices in the maritime industry, reinforcing the city's position as a global leader in this sector.
Captain Ibrahim Al Blooshi, CEO of Dubai Ports Authority, explained the Authority’s work in making LNG bunkering possible in Dubai. He highlighted the development of a new Fuel Bunkering Regulation, which provides clear rules for port operators and LNG suppliers. This regulation ensures that operations meet global safety and environmental standards, making sure that LNG bunkering is done efficiently and sustainably.
Captain Al Blooshi also spoke about the Dubai Ports Authority's ongoing efforts to promote alternative fuels in the maritime sector. He mentioned that this achievement shows Dubai’s dedication to becoming a top hub for sustainable maritime operations. The Authority continues to work with various partners to expand the use of alternative fuels, pushing for more sustainable practices and helping Dubai strengthen its position in the global maritime industry.
The Dubai Ports Authority is committed to supporting Dubai’s vision for sustainability and environmental protection. As the city moves forward with its Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, the use of LNG in maritime operations will play an essential role in creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for the industry.
