An IndiGo passenger has faced a frustrating ordeal after losing luggage worth ₹45,000 along with critical documents, including an Aadhar card, PAN card, and driving license. The incident, shared by user Ravi Handa on X, has sparked significant criticism towards the airline.
According to Handa's post, the luggage was checked in at Kolkata airport but never arrived in Guwahati. The passenger's frustration grew when the only compensation offered by IndiGo was ₹2,450, a fraction of the luggage’s actual value. Handa expressed his disbelief, questioning, "How can a bag vanish mid-air? Was the plane leaking bags?"
He continued, highlighting the inadequacy of the compensation: "Around a month later, IndiGo has come back offering ₹2,450 as compensation. It’s ridiculous. Just the bag alone would cost more than that. Apparently, there is a rule that the airline is liable for a maximum of ₹350 per kg in case they lose the bag. That’s just adding insult to injury. If someone from the IndiGo social media team is reading this - please help him out. ₹2,450 isn't going to fix it."

The post, made on August 24, has garnered over 300,000 views and nearly 2,000 likes, with numerous comments reflecting public sentiment. Some users advised against placing valuables and important documents in checked baggage. One comment noted, "The airlines ask you not to keep any valuables (cash and jewellery) in the checked-in luggage. Even important documentation like DL and PAN. Even a consumer court can't help here; move on."
Another commenter pointed out, "Credit cards often provide baggage loss insurance. As a rule of thumb, don’t put anything valuable in checked baggage. Anyone can open your bag during transit, and no one is liable for missing items."
A third user shared their personal strategy, saying, "My family rule is no valuables in checked-in luggage. A spare set of clothes is always in carry-on. I assume the airline might misplace my checked baggage. My family thinks I’m overcautious, but I’d rather be safe than sorry."
The incident underscores the challenges passengers face when dealing with lost luggage and inadequate compensation, prompting discussions on how to handle such situations and prevent future occurrences.
