Passenger Assaulted and Restrained After Attempting to Open Door Mid-Air

A violent altercation occurred on a Copa Airlines flight from Brazil to Panama when a passenger attempted to open the emergency door mid-flight. The incident took place just 30 minutes before landing when the man, armed with a plastic knife from his food tray, rushed to the rear of the plane and attempted to take a flight attendant hostage in an effort to open the door.

Videos shared on social media show the passenger being restrained by other travelers after his attempt to open the door failed. Another video shows authorities boarding the plane after landing, leading the man off in handcuffs, his face bloodied.

Photojournalist Cristiano Carvalho, who witnessed the events, described how the man initially tried to overpower a flight attendant but was too strong to be stopped. He attempted to reach the rear emergency exit and continue forward to open the door. Several passengers then intervened, overpowering and beating the man until he nearly lost consciousness.

After the plane landed in Panama, Copa Airlines confirmed that the national security team boarded the flight, removed the unruly passenger, and handed him over to judicial authorities.

The airline praised both the crew and the passengers for their quick response, ensuring the safety of everyone on board. “The crew acted swiftly and, with assistance from passengers, implemented the necessary safety protocols to control the situation until landing,” said a spokesperson for Copa Airlines.

This incident follows a separate one on a United Airlines flight, where a passenger violently attacked a sleeping, deaf, and nonverbal passenger. The suspect, Everett Chal Nelson, faces charges of assault and could face up to a year in prison if convicted.
