Jeremy Cooper, one of the paramedics involved in the administration of ketamine to Elijah McClain, received a 14-month jail sentence with work release and probation. The sentencing marks the culmination of a case that gained prominence within the Black Lives Matter movement.
Cooper's conviction in December for criminally negligent homicide stems from the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old unarmed Black man who passed away several days after an encounter with Colorado police. McClain experienced a cardiac arrest in the ambulance following a forceful arrest.
In a Colorado court on Friday, 49-year-old Cooper was handed a sentence of 14 months in jail with work release and four years' probation. Work-release programs typically entail spending nights and weekends in jail while being permitted to leave for work during weekdays.

Cooper's colleague, Peter Cichuniec, faced similar charges and was convicted last month of criminally negligent homicide and assault by drugging. Cichuniec received a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison for the assault conviction.
The incident unfolded in August 2019 when Aurora police responded to reports of a "suspicious" Black male wearing a ski mask. McClain, who was unarmed, was approached by officers, leading to a confrontation. Despite no evidence supporting claims that McClain reached for an officer's gun, police restrained him, and paramedics injected him with ketamine.
Throughout the trial, the paramedics' defense argued that they followed protocol in administering ketamine, which is approved in Colorado for individuals in an "agitated state." However, prosecutors contended that they disregarded proper procedures for handling distressed patients.
McClain's death gained widespread attention amid protests against police brutality, particularly following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020. A celebrity-backed campaign prompted a special investigation, resulting in indictments for three police officers and the two paramedics.
While two of the police officers were acquitted, the third was sentenced in January to 14 months in prison, marking another development in a case that has underscored ongoing concerns regarding police conduct and accountability.
