Palestinians in Rafah, Gaza, grieve on Thursday for the casualties resulting from Israeli airstrikes, as Israel considers plans for a ground invasion of the densely populated southern city. The prospect of a military operation in Rafah has sparked global concern, particularly due to the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where millions have sought refuge amid ongoing conflict. Aid organizations warn that any escalation would exacerbate the already catastrophic situation for Gaza's population of 2.4 million.
Israeli authorities have been vocal about their intentions to enter Rafah, situated near the Egyptian border, for over two months. Despite the absence of a ground offensive, the area has faced frequent bombardments, including overnight strikes on Wednesday and Thursday. At Al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah, mourners gathered, including two individuals devastated by grief as they stood before a white body bag containing the remains of one of the victims.
Among those killed in the Israeli airstrike was Abdallah Nabhan, 33, employed by Belgium's Enabel development agency. In response to the death of Nabhan, Brussels announced plans to summon Israel's ambassador for clarification. Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer stated that Israel's war cabinet convened on Thursday to discuss strategies for dismantling remaining Hamas units in Rafah, emphasizing that these battalions would be targeted.

The current conflict originated with a significant Hamas attack on October 7, resulting in casualties on both sides. According to official Israeli figures, approximately 1,170 people were killed in Israel, while Gaza's health ministry reports that the retaliatory Israeli offensive claimed the lives of at least 34,305 individuals, predominantly civilians, including women and children. Thursday witnessed a further escalation in the death toll, with at least 43 additional fatalities reported compared to the previous day.
As demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians gain momentum on US campuses, President Joe Biden signed legislation authorizing $13 billion in additional military aid to Israel, reinforcing the country's strategic partnership with the United States. The bill also allocates $1 billion in humanitarian aid for Gaza, alongside substantial funding for other conflict-affected regions worldwide.
