Flight operations are set to resume at Pakyong Airport in Sikkim, marking a significant development for travelers to the region. Following a six-month suspension, flights will once again commence on March 31, according to a senior official familiar with the matter. The Pakyong airport director, RK Grover, confirmed that SpiceJet, a low-cost carrier, will operate two flights, originating from Kolkata and New Delhi respectively. Daily flights between Kolkata and Pakyong will be available, along with a five-day-a-week service between New Delhi and Pakyong, all operated by 78-seater aircraft.
The suspension of services at Pakyong Airport occurred due to operational issues, including ongoing maintenance work, which has now been completed. Despite the airport's challenges, SpiceJet initiated flight operations there in 2018. However, service consistency has been hindered by various operational obstacles, including visibility issues.
The renewed flight services come as a boon, particularly for tourists planning to visit Sikkim during the upcoming summer holidays. Sikkim, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and rich biodiversity, attracts a significant number of visitors annually. Now, with flight services resuming, travelers have easier access to this Himalayan state, enhancing their overall travel experience.
In addition to the convenience of flight services, Sikkim offers an array of attractions and activities for tourists. The period from March to May is considered the best time to visit, with comfortable temperatures ideal for outdoor activities such as trekking, hiking, and wildlife spotting. This time also offers clear skies, providing unobstructed views of the majestic mountain peaks, including the iconic Kanchenjunga.
Moreover, the offseason period ensures a less crowded experience, allowing travelers to immerse themselves more intimately in Sikkim's natural beauty and vibrant local culture. Wildlife enthusiasts will particularly enjoy this time, as many species come out of hibernation and are more active, offering opportunities to spot rare Himalayan wildlife species like the red panda and snow leopard.
Overall, the resumption of flight services at Pakyong Airport opens up new possibilities for travelers seeking to explore the enchanting landscapes and cultural heritage of Sikkim, promising an unforgettable journey amidst the tranquility of the Himalayas.
