Tragedy struck late Tuesday night when a bus carrying Pakistani pilgrims overturned in Iran's central Yazd province, resulting in the deaths of 28 passengers and leaving 23 others injured, according to Iranian state media reports.
The deadly accident occurred as the bus was transporting pilgrims, primarily Shiite Muslims, who were traveling to participate in the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq's Karbala Governorate. This pilgrimage marks a significant religious observance, commemorating the 40th day of mourning following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and a revered figure in Shiite Islam.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Iranian traffic police revealed that the accident was caused by a technical defect in the bus's braking system. The bus, which was traveling through the central province of Yazd, lost control due to this malfunction, leading to the tragic overturn.
The director-general of crisis management for Yazd province provided further details during a broadcast on state television, stating, "Unfortunately, 11 women and 17 men lost their lives in this accident. Seven of the injured are in critical condition, and six others have since been discharged from the hospital."
In response to the accident, Pakistan’s consular services in Iran have been called to Yazd province to provide support and follow up on the incident, as reported by Iranian officials. The Iranian government expressed its condolences to Pakistan and the families of those affected. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani conveyed the nation's grief on X, stating, "We express our sincere sympathy to the neighboring and brotherly government of Pakistan and the bereaved families. Relevant authorities in Iran are actively pursuing relief and treatment services."
The Arbaeen pilgrimage is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, drawing millions of Shiite Muslims annually to the city of Karbala in Iraq. Pilgrims from across the globe make this journey to pay their respects to Imam Hussein, often facing perilous travel conditions. The tragic bus accident in Yazd highlights the dangers faced by many on their pilgrimage journey.
As the Iranian authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the brake failure, the country mourns the loss of these lives and works to ensure that the injured receive the necessary medical care. The disaster underscores the ongoing need for stringent safety measures and regular maintenance checks on vehicles, especially those transporting large numbers of passengers across long distances.
The loss has resonated deeply with both the Iranian and Pakistani communities, united in their grief over this tragic event during a time of spiritual observance.
