Pakistan to Compensate Millions for 5 Chinese Killed in Bombing

Post by : Elena Malik

In a significant development, Pakistan has decided to compensate the families of five Chinese nationals who tragically lost their lives in a suicide bombing incident. The attack occurred in March in the troubled northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, specifically targeting a vehicle transporting the victims to a construction site of the Dasu Hydroelectric power station. The victims included five Chinese nationals and their Pakistani driver.

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Pakistan's Cabinet convened on Thursday and unanimously approved a compensation package totaling USD 2.58 million for the families of the deceased Chinese workers. This compensation decision underscores Pakistan's commitment to supporting and standing in solidarity with its Chinese counterparts during this challenging time.

According to reports from Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, each family of the deceased will receive USD 516,000 as part of the compensation package. This gesture is seen as a goodwill measure aimed at providing financial assistance and support to the grieving families who have suffered an irreparable loss.

The approval of the compensation package marks a significant step by the Pakistani government to address the aftermath of the tragic incident and to demonstrate its commitment to its strategic partnership with China. The funds for the compensation will be transferred promptly to the account of the Pakistani embassy in Beijing. From there, the funds will be disbursed to the families of the deceased through appropriate channels, ensuring swift and efficient delivery of the financial assistance.

This compensation announcement comes at a crucial time, as Pakistan prepares for the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to Beijing early next month. During his visit, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to discuss the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. The CPEC project, a flagship initiative under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), aims to enhance connectivity and foster economic development between China and Pakistan.

The tragic incident underscores the challenges faced by both countries as they strive to advance their bilateral cooperation and promote regional stability. Thousands of Chinese personnel are currently engaged in various projects across Pakistan under the ambit of the CPEC initiative, highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership between the two nations.

Overall, the compensation decision reflects Pakistan's commitment to upholding its responsibilities and obligations towards its international partners, particularly during times of adversity. It also reaffirms the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Pakistan and China, as they continue to work together towards shared goals of development, prosperity, and regional peace.
