Pakistan achieved a significant milestone on Thursday as it successfully launched the PAKSAT MM1, a multi-mission communication satellite, from New Delhi in collaboration with China. This marks the country's second satellite launch within a month, underscoring its growing presence in space technology. The satellite was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, as reported by China's state-run Xinhua news agency, and it reached its designated orbit flawlessly.
The PAKSAT MM1 satellite is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing communication infrastructure across Pakistan. It is anticipated to greatly improve internet services, television broadcasts, cellular connectivity, and broadband access nationwide. According to Pakistan Television, the satellite is slated to commence its services in August, promising to revolutionize digital connectivity throughout the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his enthusiasm about the launch, particularly highlighting the transformative potential of the PAKSAT MM1 in advancing internet connectivity across Pakistan. He emphasized how the satellite's cutting-edge communication technology would positively impact various sectors, including e-commerce, e-governance, and economic activities, ultimately improving the lives of Pakistani citizens.
Sharif also underscored the strong partnership between Pakistan and China, emphasizing the collaborative efforts that led to the successful satellite launch. He praised the technical achievements of placing the satellite into its geostationary orbit, hailing it as a testament to Pakistan's scientific and technological capabilities.
Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) played a vital role in the satellite launch, as part of the National Space Programme 2047. The project represents a joint endeavor between Suparco and the Chinese aerospace industry to address Pakistan's growing communication and connectivity needs.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, present at the launch, expressed aspirations for Pakistan to launch its satellites using its own rockets from domestic launch pads in the near future, highlighting the nation's ambitions in space exploration.
This achievement follows Pakistan's recent participation in China's Chang'e-6 lunar mission, where its mini satellite, 'iCube-Qamar,' was launched from Hainan province on May 3. The iCube-Qamar made history by transmitting the first-ever images of the moon from lunar orbit on May 8.
Pakistan's burgeoning presence in space is evident with at least six satellites to its name, including BADR-A, BADR-B, PAKSAT 1-R, PRSS-1, PakTes 1-A, and iCube-Qamar. These endeavors reflect the country's commitment to harnessing space technology for socio-economic development and scientific advancement.
