Outrage as 63-Year-Old Priest Weds 12-Year-Old in Ghana

A 63-year-old priest in Ghana, Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII, has sparked uproar after marrying a 12-year-old girl, who was chosen as his wife at the age of six. The marriage took place in Nungua, Krowor, during a customary ceremony.

Footage of the elaborate event, shared on social media by the local news channel Ablade, depicted numerous community members witnessing the wedding, prompting criticism from many Ghanaians. Women at the ceremony were heard advising the young girl in the local 'Ga' language to enhance her 'sex appeal' for her new husband.

In response to external criticism, local community leaders defended their customs and traditions, emphasizing their lack of understanding among outsiders. They included advising the young girl to prepare for her future role as a wife by using perfume received as a gift.

Leaders from the Nungua indigenous community, to which both the girl and the priest belong, condemned the public's disapproval, attributing it to ignorance.

Nii Bortey Kofi Frankwa II, a prominent community leader, defended the marriage as "entirely based on tradition and custom," stating that the girl began the rituals to become the priest's wife at the age of six, without hindering her education.

While the Ghanaian government has not yet responded to the controversy, the legal minimum age for marriage in Ghana is 18. Despite a declining trend in child marriages nationwide, they persist in certain regions and communities.
