OpenAI, the company behind the widely used ChatGPT, is reportedly in the process of raising billions of dollars in a new funding round that could value the company at over $100 billion, according to a Wall Street Journal report published on Wednesday.

The funding round is expected to be spearheaded by Thrive Capital, a prominent venture capital firm, which is poised to contribute approximately $1 billion. Additionally, tech giant Microsoft, a key supporter of OpenAI, is also anticipated to invest in this round, the report notes, citing sources familiar with the situation.

The potential investment comes amid a surge in interest and valuation driven by ChatGPT, the company's AI-powered chatbot known for its human-like response generation. This growth underscores the increasing prominence of artificial intelligence and its significant impact on OpenAI’s market valuation.

Neither OpenAI, Microsoft, nor Thrive Capital has yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters.
