OpenAI has recently launched a new version of its model, called GPT 4.1. It comes with three versions: GPT 4.1, GPT 4.1 mini, and GPT 4.1 nano. These new models are designed to help solve complex problems related to coding. One of the big changes is that these models can handle more information at once, allowing them to understand and process much larger amounts of data, up to 1 million tokens (tokens are pieces of text). The models also have new knowledge that is updated until June 2024.

This release comes at a time when other big companies like Google and Anthropic are also developing similar models for coding. Google's new model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, also supports 1 million tokens and works well with coding tasks. Other companies like Anthropic and DeepSeek are also releasing their own models, gaining attention for their AI systems.
OpenAI claims that GPT 4.1 is better than the older GPT 4.0 when it comes to coding tasks. It can solve problems more easily, work with websites and apps better, make fewer unnecessary changes, and follow rules more reliably. OpenAI also said that GPT 4.1 will be replacing an older model, GPT 4.5 Preview, which will no longer be available after July 14, 2025. This change will give developers time to switch to the newer models. The company mentioned that GPT 4.5 was useful in gathering feedback, and they will bring forward some of the things people liked about it into future versions.
One of the great things about GPT 4.1 is that it is cheaper than the older version. OpenAI has made improvements to how the models work, so they cost less to use. GPT 4.1 is 26% cheaper than GPT 4.0 for average queries. The smallest version, GPT 4.1 nano, is the least expensive and fastest model OpenAI has ever created.
Here are the prices for the new models: GPT 4.1 costs $2 for every million input tokens and $8 for every million output tokens. GPT 4.1 mini costs $0.40 per million input tokens and $1.60 per million output tokens. GPT 4.1 nano costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.40 per million output tokens.
OpenAI is also giving a bigger discount for queries that use the same information over and over. The discount has increased to 75%, up from 50%. Additionally, long-context requests won’t cost extra, except for the standard token costs.
The launch of GPT 4.1 shows OpenAI’s focus on making it easier for developers to use these models for solving problems while keeping prices low and performance high.
