Norway has effectively met its ambitious 2025 target to phase out the sale of new fossil-fuel passenger cars. According to the latest data from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), nearly all new vehicles registered in 2025 were electric or plug-in hybrids, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to sustainable transport.
In total, 179,549 new passenger cars were registered in Norway during 2025. Of these, 172,232 were fully electric vehicles, while 2,751 were plug-in hybrid models. Together, these zero or low-emission vehicles accounted for an impressive 95.9% of all new car sales, up from 88.9% in 2024.
Furthermore, 97.5% of all new vehicles sold last year were capable of charging via a plug, underscoring Norway’s leadership in electric vehicle adoption.
The remaining registrations included 2,306 conventional hybrids without plug-in capability, 1,773 diesel cars, and only 487 petrol-powered vehicles. This means just 1.3% of new vehicles sold in Norway in 2025 had no traction battery. Notably, no hydrogen-powered cars were registered in 2025, down from nine units in the previous year.
Norway’s strong push towards electric mobility showcases its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and fostering a cleaner, greener future for transportation.
