North Korea's Kim Oversees Drills Simulation preemptive Strike on South Korea

NEW DELHI: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw firing drills involving nuclear-capable "super-large" multiple rocket launchers, according to state media reports on Friday. These exercises were purportedly conducted to showcase North Korea's readiness for preemptive strikes against South Korea.

These drills coincide with what South Korea identified as a series of ballistic missile test-launches carried out by North Korea on Thursday. Analysts note that North Korea's deployment of large artillery rockets blurs the distinction between conventional artillery systems and short-range ballistic missiles, as these rockets possess their own propulsion and guidance systems.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) asserted that these recent weapons tests underscore North Korea's resolve to preemptively strike South Korea if it perceives any threat. Kim Jong Un, commenting on the drills, warned of severe consequences for provocations against North Korea.

KCNA further criticized South Korea's response to the drills, labeling it as a "clumsy counteraction" against North Korea's legitimate sovereign rights. This condemnation stemmed from South Korea's aerial exercises conducted shortly before North Korea's failed attempt to launch a spy satellite earlier in the week.

The multiple rocket launchers featured in the drills are a significant component of North Korea's arsenal aimed at South Korea, with claims that they can carry tactical nuclear warheads. State media images depicted Kim Jong Un observing the launch of at least 18 projectiles from mobile launch vehicles.

Simultaneously, South Korea's military reported North Korea's firing of approximately 10 suspected ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast. The unsuccessful satellite launch by North Korea drew condemnation from the US, South Korea, and other nations, as it violated UN sanctions prohibiting such activities.

Despite international criticism, North Korea maintains its stance on conducting satellite launches and missile tests, asserting them as sovereign rights. Recent weapons tests indicate North Korea's efforts to bolster its nuclear capabilities, ostensibly in response to perceived threats from the US. Foreign analysts suggest that North Korea seeks to leverage its expanding nuclear arsenal for concessions in future diplomatic negotiations.
