North Korea Plans to Destroy Cross-Border Roads with South Korea

North Korea is preparing to demolish cross-border roads that connect it to South Korea, amid rising tensions and accusations between the two nations. The announcement comes after North Korea claimed that South Korea had deployed drones to drop anti-North Korean leaflets over Pyongyang.

On Monday, officials from Seoul reported that North Korean troops were camouflaged near key roads on the North's side of the heavily militarized border, indicating imminent plans to destroy these routes. The military spokesperson for South Korea suggested that preparations might begin as early as that day.

Last week, North Korea's military declared its intention to sever all roads and railways linked to South Korea, emphasizing that it would fortify areas along the border. This announcement followed North Korea's allegations regarding South Korean drone activity.

In a statement on Friday, North Korea accused South Korea of deploying drones to scatter a significant number of leaflets, labeling this action as a provocative maneuver that could escalate into armed conflict. The North’s military warned of dire consequences if such drone incursions continued.

Responding to inquiries about whether South Korean military or civilian drones were involved, a spokesperson from South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff refrained from making comments, indicating a desire to avoid being drawn into what they perceive as North Korean tactics to create pretexts for provocations.

Over the weekend, North Korea reiterated its threats, stating that it had placed eight fully armed artillery units at the border, ready to fire if South Korean drones were again detected over Pyongyang.

Since 2022, South Korea has been enhancing its defenses against drone incursions, particularly after five North Korean drones entered its airspace and traversed the capital, Seoul, for several hours.

Military experts have noted that civilians in South Korea could easily acquire drones with sufficient range to reach Pyongyang. North Korea, however, argued that the drones detected over its capital were sophisticated machines that required specialized launchers or runways, asserting that a civilian group could not have operated them.

The two Koreas remain in a state of war, technically, since the 1950-53 conflict ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. The cross-border connections serve as remnants of earlier periods of diplomacy, including a 2018 summit where leaders of both nations declared their commitment to peace and an end to hostilities.

However, in recent months, North Korea has reintroduced heavy weaponry into the Demilitarized Zone and restored guard posts, undermining the military agreements previously established to reduce tensions.
