North Korea's military is on high alert, prepared to open fire as tensions escalate with South Korea over accusations of drone activity. According to reports from Pyongyang's state media, the North's artillery units stationed near the border have been ordered to be ready for potential conflict in light of perceived incursions by South Korean drones.
The friction stems from South Korean defectors and activists who have been sending aid parcels and leaflets critical of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un into the North, often using drones. This has drawn ire from Pyongyang, which has blamed the South Korean military for allowing such actions to occur. In retaliation, North Korea has reportedly launched balloons filled with trash across the border into South Korea.
A spokesperson for North Korea's defense ministry stated that the country anticipates further drone flights over its capital, prompting military preparations for various scenarios, including armed conflict. The tensions intensified after North Korea accused South Korea of flying drones over Pyongyang during the past week. Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of Kim Jong Un, issued a warning to Seoul, declaring that a "horrible disaster" would follow if the South Korean military failed to act against the alleged incursions.

In response to the allegations, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that they could not verify North Korea's claims regarding the drone flights. The situation remains precarious, with both sides on edge amid a backdrop of historic hostilities that have yet to be resolved since the Korean War, which ended in an armistice but not a formal peace treaty.
