Nikki Haley Won't Apologize for Criticizing Trump, But Plans to Do This

Nikki Haley, a former presidential contender, remains steadfast in her refusal to retract her previous criticisms of former President Donald Trump, despite labeling him as “toxic” and “unhinged” during the GOP convention last week. In a recent CNN interview, Haley affirmed that she would neither “apologize nor take anything back” regarding her past statements about Trump. This stance comes even as she has recently shifted her position to support his candidacy.

Haley had previously characterized Trump as lacking “moral clarity” and referred to him as “toxic” and “unhinged” during the Republican primary. She addressed these comments in her interview, emphasizing that harsh words are part of the political process. “I said a lot of tough things about him in the campaign. He said a lot of tough things about me in the campaign. That’s what happens in campaigns. I don’t think we need to apologize or take anything back. I don’t plan on doing that,” Haley stated. Despite her earlier criticism, she confirmed that she would still vote for Trump, the same individual she had once labeled as bringing “chaos” to politics.

Trump, in turn, had not held back his criticism of Haley. He made derogatory comments about her husband’s military service and referred to her as “bird brain Nikki Haley.” Nevertheless, Haley has recently reversed her position. In May, she publicly endorsed Trump, a significant shift from her earlier stance in February when she had remarked that there was “no need to kiss the ring.”

Haley also addressed her disagreements with Trump, noting that while she does not always agree with him, she believes in considering his perspective. “I don’t agree with Trump 100% of the time, and I don’t expect them to agree with Trump 100% of the time to vote for him. But I wanted them to think about it through my eyes and how I thought about it,” she explained.

In addition to her political pivot, Haley has taken legal action against her former supporters. She sent a cease and desist letter to a Political Action Committee (PAC) known as “Haley Voters for Harris,” further demonstrating her efforts to manage her political image and affiliations.

Haley's interview also touched on President Joe Biden’s decision to endorse Kamala Harris as his potential successor. Haley expressed that she was not surprised by Biden’s choice. “Through the whole campaign, I fought for mental competency tests. I wasn’t doing it to be disrespectful. I wasn’t doing it to be mean. I was doing it because I think it’s not just Joe Biden,” Haley said. She continued, “It’s a problem for the American people,” and added that she had always viewed a vote for Biden as effectively a vote for Harris.

Haley had previously asserted that the party which retired its 80-year-old candidate first would have an electoral advantage. Despite these earlier comments, she praised Trump in a recent speech at the Republican National Convention, a shift from her initial reception. Haley also criticized Kamala Harris for being a far-left choice, yet denounced some Republicans’ racist depictions of Harris as merely a “DEI hire.”

“The fact that you put in one of the most liberal politicians you probably could have put in, it’s going to be an issue. There’s so many issues we can talk about when it comes to Kamala Harris that it doesn’t matter what she looks like,” Haley concluded.
