Kolkata: In the wake of a violent attack on the RG Kar Hospital’s Emergency Department, the new principal, Suhrita Pal, lost her temper during a confrontation with protesting doctors. The unrest follows a midnight assault by a large mob on August 15, which targeted the hospital, destroyed the protest site, and clashed with police. Fifteen officers sustained injuries in the melee.
Suhrita Pal’s frustration came to a head as doctors demanded immediate action in response to the attack and questioned her ability to address their concerns. In an emotional response, Pal declared, "I need one hour to do some official work. You need to believe me, I won’t go. You have to believe me. If you can’t believe me, then don’t expect anything from me." Her remarks were made amidst ongoing tensions over her predecessor, Sandip Ghosh, who was removed from his position after the Calcutta High Court reacted to his abrupt reassignment.
Ghosh had been appointed Principal of National Medical College and Hospital immediately after resigning from RG Kar, a move that sparked protests and led to his subsequent forced leave by the High Court. Meanwhile, Pal, who was previously with the state health department, took over at RG Kar amidst the chaos. Her tenure has been overshadowed by the violent events and the controversy surrounding her predecessor's sudden posting.

The unrest at RG Kar was triggered by the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor on August 9, an incident that has drawn national outrage and highlighted serious security and facility issues at the state-run hospital. The attack on August 15 involved a large, unidentified mob that wreaked havoc on the Emergency Department and engaged in violent clashes with police.
Students have criticized the hospital administration for inadequate security, blaming them for the failure to protect the hospital premises and the protestors. Claims emerged that the mob intentionally destroyed evidence, though the police have denied these allegations. Additionally, Suvendu Adhikari, the BJP’s Leader of the Opposition, has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of deploying "goons" from the Trinamool Congress to disrupt protests near the hospital.
The situation remains tense as the city grapples with the fallout from the attack and ongoing demands for justice and improved security measures.
