Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward protecting its bee population and enhancing sustainable honey production through a new joint initiative by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) and the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA).

The programme aims to protect pollinators, strengthen biodiversity, and promote responsible beekeeping while supporting local food production and rural livelihoods. Under the initiative, a select group of accomplished beekeepers will gain regulated access to government-owned woodlands, allowing them to manage their hives in a natural and protected environment.

Launching in October to coincide with the Sidr honey season, the pilot phase includes fifteen expert apiarists chosen from among the winners of the Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Agricultural Excellence Award. Their participation ensures that only experienced and skilled professionals handle the production process, maintaining the quality for which Abu Dhabi’s honey is known.

To maintain ecological balance, each participant will be limited to a maximum of 100 hives. This regulation helps control bee density, prevents overpopulation, and ensures that nectar sources remain sufficient. Beekeepers are also required to maintain proper records and submit honey samples for quality checks, ensuring transparency and adherence to safety standards.

ADAFSA will conduct weekly inspections covering all stages — from hive management to honey collection and sample testing. The honey produced will undergo rigorous analysis for pesticide residues, antibiotics, and other quality parameters to ensure compliance with UAE standards.

The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader commitment to sustainability, food security, and environmental preservation. By integrating agricultural innovation with ecosystem protection, it strengthens the Emirate’s position as a leader in sustainable food production and natural resource management.
